I Came So Far For Beauty

Dior has been blowing my mind with their amazing make up products lately. Back in November I was lucky enough to get my hands on their Night Diamond Luminizing Powder and I've been obsessing over it ever since.

It adds a gorgeous glow to the face/collar bones/arms/legs.... and the packaging is totally cute!

I've been singing the praises of their Pro Cheek cream blush for awhile now

The colors are rich, and the cream stays in place nicely.

Lately, I've totally gotten in to their Diorshow Blackout Mascara

I love the big chunky brush for creating a dramatic look, and the color is deep black... it doesn't dry out to be an ashy grey!

Now I just got an advance of Dior's new Harmonie De Blush in "Rose Brazilia". Oh my gosh, it is so beautiful I can't even stand it!  It's a combination of peach, pink, and dusty rose with a shimmery gold laced through. I can't find a picture online yet, and the pic I tried to take did not do it justice. When this hits the counter, it is a must have! It's so gorgeous I don't even want to use it!

P.S. I've added some new features to the side bar of my blog. --------->
You can now follow me on Twitter, and I've made a playlist of some of the music I'm listening to which will be changing up from time to time. You can also see what users are following my blog, so be sure and check out their lovely blogs as well. Let's get interactive!

Always Love

Angela Lindvall for the cover of Women's Wear Daily Green Issue.

I'm going through a bunch of images to update my personal website and ran across this shoot I did with supermodel/environmentalist Angela Lindvall.  This is the job that first got me into my research on environmentally responsible beauty products which led me to greenmua.com (thanks to Shannon at The Beauty Closet).  Since then I have had many more requests to use environmentally friendly/cruelty free products.  It's something great to keep in mind, and to keep in your make up kit!

P.S.  Just a heads up... greenmua.com does not list one of my favorite eco friendly lines, Tarte, and Urban Decay now has a line of vegan products!

First Love

Some time ago I ran across a list of urls to make up artists websites called Make Up Artists To Obsess Over that had been created by a young make up artist...  I was beyond flattered to see my (terribly outdated) website on that list.  For as long as I can remember, I obsess over other make up artists work.  To this day, in my down time I constantly find myself visiting some of my make up hero's websites and pouring over the images.  (I do this with photographers and artists as well.)  I like to save my favorites in a folder marked "inspiration".  Sometimes I never even look at the images again, but in the back of my head I am absorbing everything and it has shaped my own aesthetic.

I know a lot of my readers are young make up artists, and I would like to start regularly highlighting the work and artists that inspire me, so I can pass it along to you.

It is only fitting that the first make up artist I highlight in this series is Paul Starr.

As those of you that have followed my blog for awhile know, I had the privilege of assisting Paul when I was really getting started in this business.  I learned so much from him that I could not possibly pass on to anyone else. Paul passed away this summer, so it is with joy, and a very heavy heart that I expose you to the work of Paul Starr.

Paul was the secret weapon of Hollywood's elite.

But on to the real reason I've always loved Paul....

Interestingly enough, I was not initially inspired to be a make up artist by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood actresses, I was inspired to be a make up artist because of David Bowie, Boy George, and Marilyn Manson...  I wanted to be a make up artist because of Courtney Love and Shirley Manson and other cool "rock chicks".  I loved the creative editorial make up of the 80's and 90's, so it was only appropriate that Paul and I found each other.

This is Paul's work that is nearest and dearest to my heart.

It is truly a testament to Paul's great talent that he can do a very dark make up look on someone like Marilyn Manson, and also do a fresh faced Jen Garner for the cover of In Style.

Every make up artist starting out in this business should visit Paul's website and read the interview in the "Scene & Heard" section. My first agent directed me there at our first meeting, and I go back and read through it every now and then when I need a little kick in the pants.

"The paradox of beauty is that it breaks your heart." - Paul Starr

Pink Love

I'm thrilled to tell you that Lancôme has brought back their wildly popular Color Fever Gloss in Piha Black

The wildly popular gloss (which was designed as a top coat but looks great on it's own) was brought back as part of their PINK IRREVERENCE COLLECTION, the first collection by their new artistic director Aaron De May.

The gloss is sheer, but adds vampy dimension to your favorite lip colour.  The entire collection is STUNNING!

P.S.  This collection is LIMITED so don't come crying to me when you don't have any black sparkly lip gloss!!!  Now... off to work! (I think... still waiting on a call time!)

Lights and Music

Here's one of the Sony Playstation ads I did with Mark Hunter over the summer...

Nothing too exciting as far as make up goes, but I see this ad just about every time I crack open a magazine!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

LA's eco friendly nail salon Recess is offering free mani/pedi's if you recycle!

Turn in 10 old bottles of nail polish for a free manicure, and 15 bottles for a free pedicure.

Speaking of being green...

I've been getting more and more requests to use eco friendly products for certain clients.  My favorite eco friendly lines are Tarte and Josie Maran Cosmetics, and skin care by Juice Beauty and Dr. Hauschka...

Make up artists can find some helpful links and tips on being green on greenmua.com.
I try to be more responsible by not using disposables.  It's a good idea to use washable puffs instead of disposables ones, and if you must use sponges (I typically prefer to use brushes or my fingers), you should check in to the beauty blender.

It's a reusable sponge with a great shape that will literally revolutionize the way you do make up!
